A senior U.S. military lawyer has advised officers who believe they are receiving unlawful orders to consider requesting retirement rather than resigning in protest. Sources say the guidance came from a lawyer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who warned that resignation could be viewed as a political act, while retirement is seen as a more neutral and appropriate path.
